The final piece of the cartoon puzzle was the software I needed to cartoon with. I did some research and chose Pixelmator. This is a Mac based image editor... like Photoshop... but without the price tag. Adobe seems to be the leader in photo editing software, but paying a monthly subscription to use the software bothers me. I’m old... I’m used to certain ways of life... especially with software...I buy the software... I use the software until it is no longer compatible with anything else... then cry out to the various computer gods, “Why have you forsaken me?!?”... finally give in and buy new software... then promptly bellyache about how the new software is different from the previous version... then I get used to the new software.... then I like the new software... and when THAT software needs an upgrade...I repeat this process....This is pretty much how I live my life...
I purchased Pixelmator for my main computer ($30) and the mobile version for the iPad Pro ($5) and I have never been so happy with a purchase.
I’m slowly figuring out what this software can do. It seems like every week I figure out something new and cool I can add to my ‘toons. I don’t use the computer version as often... it definitely has more to offer than the mobile version.... but I’m a long ways off from figuring out all that the mobile version can do. I like the little dopamine rush I get when I figure out a new brush or effect. I’m sure each image editor out there has its good and bad points... and everyone has their favorite... but I would recommend Pixelmator to anyone looking for an art program. It is a complex program that even a novice can figure out.
